Monday in Kamakura

Today I took Jimmy and Claudia to Kamakura to see the largest outdoor Buddha in Japan followed by some shrines and temples. Here is a picture of the Buddha from when Mike and I went to visit last year...its huge

On our way to see the Hase Temple, we stopped in for lunch at this place that serves okonomiaki. Here are the directions to make it, in Japanese, as well as our lunch starting to cook.

Group shot followed by eating our lunch and then on to the Hase Temple

The garden at the beginning of the temple followed by the Temple

The view from the top.

Another pond area

In one area they had caves, which were really cool. We went through them and it was an area to light candles and place mini buddhas for deceased souls. I only took a picture of the cave and not the other area. This was a really great place.

After the temple we took the train back to the main station and then got on our train, which brought us back to Tokyo. It was a good day!

St. Patrick's Day Parade

Even in Japan, we celebrate St. Pattys Day with parades and the party starts early, as in today. It's Sunday and there are parades going on all over Tokyo and other cities. We took Jimmy and Claudia to Harajuku park and to see the shrine. It was very fun and we also got to see a wedding processional. There is the bride.

The shrine is adjacent to this huge park called Yoyogi park, which is beautiful and has lots of room for anything you want to do. They even had a dog park! While at the park, we got to see the dancing Elvises! They are a group of people that dress up in 50s attire and dance right as you enter the park. Mike had told me about it, but I had never seen them. Here are some of their moves.

Even the girls got down!

On our way out, we saw a monkey on a leash!

Next we went to the St. Patty's day parade, which was really cool. We had drinks in hand and saw all the Irish people in Japan. There were some random things in the parade, but all in all, it was fun. Here is the start of the parade

And St. Patick, himself

The Tokyo Irish Setters Group also came along

And then these huge dogs

And no parade is complete without a leprechaun, whose hat is too big

And they couldn't forget the Guinness

Mike and Jimmy with Guinness

And the Knights, followed by...

When the jester sang for the king and queen...Oh, and while the king was looking down, The jester stole his thorny crown

After the parade, we had sushi and then went to the bar to celebrate some more!

Saturday Morning

Friday night + 2 bottles of wine + morning after =

Good thing Jimmy and Claudia don't get here until the evening! On another note, just created a Facebook account this morning. Figure I should see what all the fuss is about since Amanda spends several hours a day on it. Sent out a bunch of "friend requests". PLEASE, be my friend!

Sunny Thursday

Today the sun was out and it was a great day, so I spent the afternoon out and about around Hiroo area before going to the international grocery store. I started out with lunch at this cafe, where I got to sit outside and enjoy the weather. I had a shrimp and potato panini, which might not sound that good, but it was, mainly because of the pesto sauce on it. But honestly not a bad combination! The girl behind was also having lunch, but not sure if liked that I was taking a picture especially since she looks confused

Next I strolled around the park that is across the grocery store. I can't wait until spring comes because this place will be amazing. Just look at some of the colors that are yet to come. This area even displays a sign of each flower to look for along with signs of all the birds that will frequent the area as well.

As I was walking along, I stumbled upong this sign, which made me laugh. I never knew they could be harmful!

I also encountered many birds, but in particular, the huge arse crows that live in Japan. Here is one of them and they scare me. Nothing like thinking of the movie, the birds, and then seeing this guy. YIKES...

This was a great park especially since it had a bridge and pond. I saw many artists sitting in different areas water painting the area. I even briefly talked to one lady and told her how I liked her picture.

I liked the pond area especially because of these turtles (yes they are real) and the men that were trying to fish. Not sure if any fish are in there, but good luck to them!

This post and park made me think of my friend John Price. I can image him loving every minute of this park because I know he would find and enjoy the beauty and serenity of it. I could also picture him picking a spot to meditate. So, here is to John, who I know would love to visit and hopefully will, but for seeing the beauty in everything, no matter what!

And we are back...

Mike and I safely arrived back from wine country on Tuesday afternoon. It was an extremely long flight that left late and couldn't land the first time, so we had to go back out and try it again. We did come back to rain, which turned into sleet/snow flurries on the way home. Oh how I miss the sun and cool weather that was in California, if only we could go back.

So the flight in was HORRIBLE on United. I can normally sleep on the long flights for a few hours, but I got not sleep on this flight. Coach/Economy already lacks space, but United makes it lack even more space by having 4 seats in the middle section, which is where we were. The only time I complain about flying is when larger people sit next to me and think it is ok to extend over the arm rail and what not just because I am smaller and fit nicely into the seat. This is what happened on our flight and it didn't help that I couldn't sleep. Mike was kind enough to switch seats with me, but it would not have made a difference. We arrived on time to beautiful in San Fran and by the time we got through everything and picked up the car, Rob and Allison were taxiing, so it worked out. We had lunch at Buena Vista, which is suppose to have the best Irish Coffees, so we tried them. By the end of lunch, I was sitting there physically, but totally zoned out due to jet lag. Mike and I took a nap as Rob drove all of us to Gloria Ferrar champagne winery. This was a great place and I'm glad we added in something different since we definitely got our fill of wine. We sampled their champagnes and then bought a bottle. We finally made it to Healdsburg about 4:30pm to check in and go to our wine and cheese hour. We had dinner at Willie's, which is a cute tapas place and then we were all ready for bed. It was about 9pm and we were all dying, so to bed we went.

Friday started out with breakfast and a trip to Safeway to pick up some lunch for the day. We started out at Silver Oak, who was not participating in barrel tasting, but does allow you to taste for a reasonable price of $10 which also comes with a complimentry glass! We all liked this place, but how could anyone not like it. Next we headed to Rued winery, where we checked in, got our wrist bands, and glasses and started barrel tasting. The day flew by quickly, but we made it to some great places, including Fritz winery where we bought some futures that tasted amzaing. We ended Friday with our dinner at Cyrus restaurant, which was fantastic!!! Our reservation was at 9pm, so that was late and if we could do it again, I would make it earlier since we didn't get out of there until 12:30, when we were all in a food coma! Amazing service and food.

Saturday we were up again and out the door to get some wine! We started out at Bella, a favorite of all of ours, because we knew it would be crazy. Sure enough, even at 11:15am, there were tons of people there. We proceeded to various wineries throughout the day including Francis Ford Coppola and the beautiful Trentadue, which was recommended by the champagne guy from Gloria Ferrar. We also had to make a stop at Jordan because it's a fav and is special for Rob and Allison. We stopped by Twomey, the sister winery for Silver Oak, and encountered all the young yuppies from San Fran wearing their argyle sweaters around their necks. All of us could not stop laughing and wondered why this was the only winery that had sooooo many young, pretentious looking people. One of them even dropped 2 of her own barrel wine glasses and then her group was asked to leave. It was funny though. We ended the night by having dinner in, since it was a long day.

Sunday came way to fast and we started out with breakfast at Costeaux french bakery, which was soooo good. We walked around the town square and stopped at La Crema, before heading over to the Camilla Inn tasting room, since we were staying at their place. From there, it was sad to leave and head back to San Fran. We dropped Rob and Allie off with her aunt and spent some time with them before their flight. Mike and I then drove down the windiest street in San Fran, Lombard street, before heading over to Coit Tower. Then we drove to our hotel, ordered room service, and watched the Oscars.

Monday came to soon and we had to catch our flight back here, boo. It was an even longer flight, where I got about 45 minutes of sleep right before we landed. Oh well
The trip was great and it was good to see Rob and Allison. The bottles we managed to check even arrived safely! There are tons of pictures, so not going to put all of them up here. I have added the link on the next post, Sonoma '10, but if you click to see them larger, the quality of the picture looks better because you are directly on shutterfly. FYI, there are a number of pictures of Mike and I because the scenery is beautiful and why not. I promise we only look tipsy in a few!

And we are off to...WINE COUNTRY!!!!!

Today Mike and I are leaving for San Francisco to meet up with Rob and Allison and then head to Healdsburg, a great little city, in the heart of Sonoma Valley. We are super excited to be going back for Barrel Tasting Weekend. 3 years ago, we planned this trip and didn't know that we are going during this weekend, so we lucked out. It was great. For a set price, now $20 (back then $10) you got a wrist band and a glass for the weekend, where you hop around from winery to winery and try what they have in the barrel. If it tastes good in the barrel, you know it will taste good when its ready.

So for this time around, we decided to go again on this weekend. We are staying in Healdsburg again, but at a different bed and breakfast. We actually weren't able to get into the B&B, but this place had downtown apartments, so we opted for one of those, which will also be fun!

I know we are both excited, but I think I am a bit more excited than Mike. It's about 2 months now and I think its a good enough time to have been away from family/friends. It will be good to see familiar faces and spend time with them.

Anywho, I must finish packing and get ready before our 1;30 bus to the airport. then its a long flight to San Fran, where we will arrive on the same day that we left, but earlier!

Have a good weekend and feel free to drink some wine and think of us!
